Now, when you think about an after-dinner drinks, you may well think of a cup of tea or coffee, or even something a little stronger. But there is another drink which is the perfect choice for after meals, not only because it tastes great, but also because it does great things for your health! That drink is peppermint tea. Much more than a refreshing beverage, peppermint tea is a fantastic beverage to enjoy after lunch or dinner. Here’s why:

Relied on by IBS sufferers

It’s interesting to know that people with Irritable Bowel Syndrome commonly rely on peppermint oil capsules to help reduce their symptoms. The fact is that if peppermint helps to provide relief to people suffering from serious digestive issues, it’s no wonder it can do great things for our everyday digestive health, too! So no surprises either that the use of peppermint tea as a healthy, refreshing beverage goes back many centuries!

When you finish your meal with a nice hot cup of peppermint tea, you’re supporting your digestive system with a herb recognised for its soothing properties. But why is it the peppermint tea is such great news for your digestive system?

Do nice things for your digestive system

It’s all thanks to peppermint’s calming effect on your stomach muscles. Not only that, but your cup of peppermint tea also gives your system a better bile flow which is essential for the digestion of fat. Essentially, that means your post-dinner cup of peppermint tea helps your food to move more quickly through your stomach.

One important thing to be aware of is that the digestion-supporting properties of peppermint tea can work against you if you suffer from acid reflux. This is because the tea may cause your lower oesophageal sphincter to relax. When that happens, your stomach contents can move up into your oesophagus, leading to acid reflux.

Help for a rather embarrassing problem...

Here’s yet another great benefit of having a cup of peppermint tea after meals. Most of us don’t like to talk about it, but we’re all affected at one time or another by digestive gas or bloating! A simple and delicious peppermint tea taken on a regular basis after meals could help to reduce that embarrassing and uncomfortable problem!

There’s even more to mint

Peppermint tea has all kinds of other health benefits, but we’ll these explore another time on this blog. For now, if you’re looking for the after-dinner drink which does great things for your digestion while tasting delicious this season, perhaps it’s time to make peppermint tea your after-dinner drink of choice!
